Army Pre-Release Seminars November and December

After every workshop we receive a torrent of calls from lone olim soldiers who have completed their service, asking about a range of topics – from tips and advice regarding employment, to consultation and aid in solving financial problems. The one case that stands out this month, another reminder on the importance of educating olim to never take anything for granted, is that of Rafael.

Rafael, a new immigrant from France, enlisted to service in the Border Patrol. After talking with him, it is impossible to miss how much of a Zionist he is and the enormous love he has for Israel. Rafael, like many other lone olim soldiers, was yet another case of someone falling through the system's cracks, of someone unaware that he must take pains to ensure he enjoys his full rights throughout his military service.

Rafael's first consultation and assessment meeting revealed he had not received his full financial rights during service, a fact that meant immediately bringing in Tzvika, the program's economic advisor.

With what may have seemed like magic, but was actually a product of a great deal of work, Tzvika managed to take care of Rafael. He ensured that Rafael receive his full rights retroactively from the Ministry of Immigration and Absorption. He also amended the lease agreement which was in such violation of his rights, and upgraded his cellular service package.

To prevent future problems, Tzvika also equipped him with the right economic tools and helped Rafael find temporary work as a security guard.

This is merely a temp job because Rafael is pursuing his dream! He wants to establish a business that provides production services for original and creative marriage proposals, and you can rest assured knowing we will be there every step of the way to help him succeed!

Like Rafael, an additional 104 lone olim soldiers who have completed their service have received consultation and help in employment these last two months. Of these, 64 also benefited from financial counseling, learning the tools and guidelines for managing a household.

We in the Knafaim Program believe in the old adage of not just feeding soldiers with fish, but rather teaching them to fish for themselves, meaning helping then grow wings that will allow them to soar into their new civilian lives
